I can never understand women. I have lady friends that collect shoes. All kind of designer shoes. Some are cute and some are…I don’t get them. There are shoes with sharp pointed tips, super tall heels, neon colors, with laces, cowgirl boots with snakeskin pattern, and so on. I asked one lady friend, “Do you wear them all?” “Of course!”
“Are they comfortable?”
“Not all of them. There are some that I can only wear for an hour at a party and then I have to change them with flip-flop.”
“If they’re not comfortable, why did you buy them and…wear them?”
“There is…something that I cannot describe that only girls like us understand.” she replied.
“Well, apparently! Because I would never buy anything that uncomfortable no matter how handsome they may look. I made a mistake once, buying a pair of handsome shoes for my wedding. I had to wear them for twelve hours during my wedding day and it caused my feet to be sore for days. That was the first time and the last time I wore those shoes. After the wedding day, I donated them.”

“Yeah, for sure, you won’t understand my feeling about shoes.” She grinned.
When I think about it, I believe most people have a hobby of collecting things like collecting books, CDs, sport’s memorabilia, or dolls. There are quirky ones like I know a person who collects tractors. And I heard a person who received recognition from the Guinness Book of Record for collecting his own belly button fluff. Gross, isn’t it? For me and my four year old son, we collect superheroes mini figures. For those, I built a shelf on the wall where we can show case our superheroes like trophies. There is indescribable feeling watching all kind of superhero figures like superman, batman, spiderman, or thor standing handsomely on top of the shelf. My dear wife mockingly said that I may have suffered from the superhero syndrome. Apparently she doesn’t get why a 39 year old man like me is still playing with superheroes toy. Surely men will never understand women and vice versa

I don’t know why we have the urge to collect things. I guess because of that ‘indescribable feeling’ that pertains to each individual that will bring satisfaction when they see the thing they love comes in a bunch. So, do you have a hobby of collecting things? Whatever that is that you are collecting, I hope you remember what the Apostle Paul said: “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). We can read it as: whatever you are collecting, do it to the glory of God. Also, this Scripture passage is a good reminder that the key to a healthy collecting is not to be consumed by the very thing we are collecting by making them the ‘god’ over our lives, but making it as a relaxing activity that will benefit our health and help us to relax so that we can serve God and others more productively.
While we’re still on the topic of collecting stuff, remind yourself of the statement of Jesus: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. ” (Matthew 6:19-21).

Hey, that’s not a bad collection idea! Hope today can be a good start for all of us to really consider collecting treasure that has an everlasting value.

Love and prayers,
